Cursive Letter G Worksheets

These cursive letter G worksheets are perfect for kids to practice the uppercase and lowercase cursive G and build their knowledge of words that start with the letter G. They were created to provide practice with cursive writing, tracing, and simple letter formation at home or in the classroom.

The letter G has value in cursive because it provides a nice rounded body with the lower loop for the lowercase g. The lowercase g also requires more space compared to most of the other small letters in cursive that have a consistent small size.

The extra loop on the lowercase g makes it a great letter for developing cursive skills.

Big Cursive G Letters

This worksheet provides extra space for kids to practice forming the letter G.

The uppercase letter should be nicely rounded while the lowercase g will need the extra space to form the nice loop at the bottom of the letter. The larger than normal size is great for working on the lowercase g since it has a tendency to get cramped if written in a smaller size. Kids can work on slowing down and tracing each curve of the g to ensure the lower loop is not too long.

Cursive G Upper & Lowercase

This page uses uppercase and lowercase G together, allowing kids to practice the size difference and the formation of each letter.

Notice the uppercase G stays mostly above the baseline while the lowercase g has a lower loop that extends below the baseline before curving back up. The most common issue with the lowercase g is the size of the lower loop. If the loop is too tight, the g looks cramped. If the loop is too loose, it runs into the line below. This is a great page for practicing a rounded letter that does not stay only above the baseline.

Cursive G 3 Letter Words

This letter G worksheet uses 3 letter words to help kids practice the formation of each letter in the word.

Words such as gum, gas, and get allow kids to practice the connections between each letter as well as forming each letter itself. The lowercase g in gum connects to the u while the g in gas connects to the a and the s. The g in get connects to the e before finishing the word with the t. Practicing these short words allows kids to slow down and focus on the connection between the letters in each word. Each word has a lower loop for the g, requiring the hand to move back up after dipping below the baseline.

How the Letter G Grew Out of C

The letter G has one of the most interesting histories out of the entire alphabet. The letter C was used in the very early Latin language to represent a couple of different sounds. To differentiate between the sounds, either an additional mark was added to the C or a different letter such as G was used. This change helped make reading and writing clearer. Even though the letter G looks very similar to the letter C today, it still has interesting roots to how it was formed and used.

In cursive, the letter G still maintains the rounded qualities of the Latin C with the exception of the lower loop on the lowercase g.
