Cursive Letter U Worksheets

The letter U is a good letter for kids to practice in cursive because it uses a nice dip of the hand and a round bottom.

Big Cursive U Letters
This worksheet will help kids practice the cursive letter U with bigger letters.
The capital U should stay nicely open while the cursive lowercase u should dip and round. The big space also helps the kids with practicing the formation of the letter as it can easily be formed to have a pointy bottom or a flat bottom that looks more like a V.
Kids can take their time and make sure that they are writing a nicely rounded letter U and not a pointed V.
Cursive U Upper & Lowercase
This worksheet will help kids practice the uppercase U and the lowercase u with the two letters put together so that kids can see the difference in size in the formation of the letters.
The uppercase U also needs to show more height than the lowercase u and the lowercase u also needs to have enough room between the two sides of the letter so that they do not look too close together.
If the two sides of the letter are written too far apart then the word that the letter is part of will look too spread out.

Cursive U 3 Letter Words
This worksheet will help kids practice the cursive letter u in 3 letter words such as urn, nut, tub, cut, and bug.
The words show how the cursive letter u connects to the other letters around it.
In the word urn the letter u comes first and connects to the r and then the n, while in the word nut the u comes between the n and the t.
The u also comes between the t and the b in the word tub, and between the c and the t in the word cut.
In the word bug, the u comes between the b and the g and allows the kids to practice a word that ends with a letter that goes below the writing line.
Practicing the letter u in the short words helps the kids recognize that the letter should not be formed to have a flat bottom but should have a slight upstroke so that it connects nicely to the next letter that they write.
How U Became Separate From V
The letter U has an interesting history as it used to be far closer to the letter V than it is now. In fact, the two letters used to be closely connected in Latin script.
One important difference between the two is that the pointed form became the modern V and the rounded form became the modern U, which is why the letters U, V, and W are so closely related today.
This makes the letter u interesting to practice in cursive script as it needs to keep its rounded bottom so that it does not turn into a V shape.
Kids should keep in mind as they practice the cursive letter u that it needs to have a nice round bottom that does not start to look more like a V.
